Young Mitchells Plain women given skills training in hairdressing to boost employment prospects
24 May 2016
The course was made possible thanks to ward allocation funding that was provided by Cllr Eddie Andrews in his capacity as the Ward 78 ward councillor. A partnership with a local service provider, Deofavente Hair Salon in Westgate, Mitchells Plain, allowed the group to undergo the training under the guidance of a professional hairdresser.
The course included training in the use of chemical treatments including colour highlighting and relaxers; blow-drying; flat-ironing; setting and washing hair; and basin etiquette.
Young hairdressers ready to launch their careers
The group of trainees graduated from the course on Monday, 16 May 2016 and each received a certificate for successfully completing both the practical and theoretical components. Each trainee also received a start-up kit worth about R10 000 containing supplies and equipment that would allow them to get their own hairdressing business up and running.
Five of the graduates have been offered further training at the invitation of Albert Fritz, the Provincial Minister of Social Development. The trainees will receive training in nail art design, hair design and massage to assist them in gaining skills to enhance their employment prospects. He has further indicated that his office will assist in securing employment opportunities for a total of 35 young women between the ages of 18 and 35.
