Wanted suspects make it to the big screen

19 February 2016

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate gave Steenberg’s 10 most wanted suspects their moment in the spotlight on Thursday, 18 February 2016.

During an operation involving a number of specialised units within the Metro Police Department, photographs of the most wanted suspects in the Steenberg policing precinct were broadcast against the walls of apartment blocks in Lavender Hill along with details of the City’s informant reward system (see photo inset).

Informant Reward System

‘The open-air screening drew a lot of attention from residents and had the desired effect of getting residents talking, but also raised awareness of our informant reward system which pays R1 000 for information leading to a successful arrest. This is but one of the ways in which we’re getting residents to cooperate with us and do their bit to make their communities safer,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

By the end of the operation, four of the suspects on the list were behind bars after being arrested at various locations in Lavender Hill. Three were wanted in connection with drug-related cases and the fourth on a charge of malicious intent to property.

‘We’ll be taking our “Wanted” roadshow around the city and might even create a special tracking and tracing team. This first outing was very successful and I am confident that the more we publicise details of the suspects, the more success we’ll have in apprehending them. Communities are growing ever more tired of crime and I believe that they will blow the whistle on the bad seeds in their midst, with or without the reward system that we’ve initiated,’ added Alderman Smith.
