The intersection of Sunnybrae and Aberdeen Roads in Rondebosch has been identified as a high-risk area for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. This assessment follows on from numerous requests by residents for traffic calming measures to be introduced as traffic flows along the roads has increased dramatically over recent years.
The intersection’s close proximity to two schools, Groote Schuur Primary and Rondebosch Boys High School, is further motivation for the road upgrade. Many pedestrians, mainly young learners, cross the road at this intersection and there have been many reports of close calls with speeding vehicles.
Transport for Cape Town, the City’s transport authority, deployed roads engineers to investigate the residents’ concerns and they concluded that the current layout of the intersection is in need of re-alignment. It has been proposed that the intersection be narrowed to prevent motorists from speeding around the blind corner as is currently the case. Two speed humps will also be installed to further reduce reckless driving behaviour.
The road improvement project is being facilitated by Cllr Ian Iversen (Ward 59) in consultation with Transport for Cape Town. He has indicated that the project will be given priority and it is hoped that implementation will be possible within the current financial year.
