Today, the City of Cape Town has received another donation of much-needed medical equipment from the local Taipei Liaison Office. This marks over 12 years of invaluable support from our steadfast partnership.

Since 2012, through the enduring and treasured collaboration between the Office of the Speaker and the Cape Town Taipei Liaison Office, the City has annually received donations of wheelchairs, walkers, and commodes, typically costing hundreds of thousands of rand.

Due to the unwavering support, exceptional generosity and goodwill of the Taipei Liaison Office, this year's donation contains:

  •  135  Adult wheelchairs;
  •    10  Child-sized wheelchairs
  •    60  Commodes; and
  •    60  Walkers

In addition to the above, a commitment has also been made by the Taipei Liaison Office for another donation of two tonnes of rice, to be received by the City, once a separate container arrives.

These donations are also made possible by the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC), a Taiwanese charity organisation, which has distributed medical equipment, medicine and clothing to people in need across Africa, for a number of years.

The ACC was founded by Venerable Huei Li in Taiwan in the early 1990s, also known as the African monk. The idea of the care centre originated from Ven. Huei Li's compassionate heart and desire to help people in Africa who are battling with terminal illness and those living in extreme poverty.

'It is my most sincere honour and privilege to again host Director-General Ms. Lily Chen, and accept this donation of medical equipment on behalf of the City, as its Speaker. I also wish to thank her and her team for their continued kindness, philanthropy and the good working relationship our offices have fostered over the years, and especially over the last year with Director-General Chen at the helm.

'As our Executive Mayor, Alderman Geordin-Hill Lewis has emphasised, we are committed to building a city of hope in Cape Town, particularly for our poor and most vulnerable residents.

'The 265 items donated today - as well as the two tonne rice donation - will significantly assist the elderly and those with health conditions or impairments, who have struggled to access such aids due to financial constraints or prolonged waiting lists at state hospitals.

'These aids not only provide essential support, but also imbue a sense of autonomy, dignity, and, above all, hope to those in need, where previously, there may have been none. And for that, the City and I would like to express our most sincere thanks and deepest appreciation and gratitude for this exceptionally generous and continued support,' Said Speaker, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
