On Monday, 7 December 2015 the City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development department hosted a joint awareness session with the Safeline Child Abuse Centre at Beacon Hill High School in Mitchells Plain. The initiative formed part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign and was supported by Cllr Solomon Philander (Ward 79).
District officials from the Social Development department and representatives from Safeline and the Cape Flats YMCA held a debate with the high school learners which aimed to raise awareness around the issue of gender-based violence and the steps that can be taken to prevent its occurrence in schools and the larger community.
Cllr Philander also made available a funding grant from his ward allocation that will allow a social development officer to be placed at the school. The officer’s role will be to offer support and assistance to children who are affected by gender-based violence either in the classroom or at home.
The initiative was welcomed by the school’s principal, who thanked the Social Development department and other role-players for working together to make a difference in the community.
