The City’s Subcouncil 13 is improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in the
area by upgrading sidewalks in Philippi.
Last month saw the completion of a project to upgrade sidewalks in Subcouncil
13, which will create a safe space for pedestrians to use and also instil a
sense of community pride.
Subcouncil 13 comprises areas such as Philippi, Weltevreden Valley, Samora,
Kosovo informal settlement, Vlei informal settlement, Lower Crossroads, the
Philippi industrial area, Crossroads and Nyanga.
Sidewalks along the following streets in Philippi East were upgraded:
Ntabazokhwahlambo, Ntabethemba and Nduli Streets.
Over R200 000 was spent on the upgrade of sidewalks in Ward 35, sourced from
ward allocation funding in the current financial year.
‘The much-needed upgrade of the sidewalks has not only created a safe and
easily accessible walkway for pedestrians, but has also beautified the built
environment. This intervention forms part of our commitment to create a safe
city,’ said Subcouncil 13 Chairperson, Councillor Rhoda-Ann Bazier.
