Sexual health the focus during the Month of Love

1 February 2019

Observed annually, STI/Condom Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about STIs, including information on what they are, risk factors, symptoms, treatment and prevention.

City clinics experienced a slight drop in the number of STIs recorded at its facilities in the first half of 2018 (17 122), compared to the same period in the previous year (17 430).

Young women are also taking charge of their reproductive health with 43 232 women under 18 accessing reproductive health services at clinics in 2018, compared to 40 887 in 2017.

Male and female condom distribution increased from just under 41 million in 2017 to nearly 44,5 million in 2018. Condoms offer protection against STIs and also help prevent unwanted pregnancy.

‘We have seen a slight decline in the number of STIs recorded at our facilities, which is very encouraging. We can only hope that this means more people are having protected sex, but we are also wise to the fact that many people still refuse to get tested for HIV and treated for STIs, because of stigma and fear, among other factors.

‘Whether it is the fear of being judged for being sexually active, or not being responsible about it, or the widely held misperception that men shouldn’t seek help because it somehow makes them seem weak - these attitudes may slow our progress but, as the statistics show, the narrative is changing and more people are taking charge of their sexual wellbeing,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

All of the City’s clinics are able to diagnose and treat STIs.

Clients who think they may have an STI or just want to learn more about sexual health can expect a private and confidential consultation, a full examination and diagnosis, and treatment if required. Clients are offered HIV tests, provided with condoms and given a demonstration on how to use these. They are also guided through the importance of notifying their sexual partner/s about their condition so that they too can get tested.

In the last decade, City Health has also introduced a number of facilities and programmes catering for men and the youth specifically, to encourage them to seek medical care and advice in pursuit of their sexual and overall wellbeing.

‘STI/Condom month coincides with the Month of Love. If you truly love your partner, but more importantly yourself, please ensure that you use protection at all times, get tested, know your status and seek help or advice from your nearest clinic,’ added Councillor Badroodien.
