A public participation process has been initiated to give the communities and stakeholders an opportunity to comment on the proposal for the informal trading plan for the Mitchells Plain Town Centre

A public participation process has been initiated to give the communities and stakeholders an opportunity to comment on the proposal for the informal trading plan for the Mitchells Plain Town Centre (MPTC).

Changes in trading dynamics in the area have triggered the need to review the current informal trading plan to address some of the challenges and to create an enabling, supportive and well-managed trading environment for all users of this public space.

‘The proposed changes will, among other things, address crime, provide bigger trading bays and most importantly, enhance the ability of traders to adhere to the Covid-19 safety regulations.

‘The City of Cape Town recognises the historical significance of the Mitchells Plain Town Centre to informal traders and its contribution to the economy and poverty reduction. It also helps with the creation of employment opportunities that in turn contribute to the household income. The effect of the trading plan is to provide dedicated informal trading opportunities and security of tenure for informal traders in the area.

‘The City, through this public participation process, wants to propose the best possible plan with input from the whole community for a sustainable and vibrant informal sector to create an environment that is conducive to the growth of businesses and the economy. It should also encourage cooperative partnerships and engagements to pull together collective resources to enhance the informal economic sector,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.

To view and comment on the draft informal trading plan, the public can visit:

  • the Subcouncil 12 offices at the Lentegeur Administrative Building, corner of Melkbos and Merrydale Roads, Mitchells Plain, from 08:00 until 15:00 on weekdays.
