Public advised of limited capacity for disposal of builders’ rubble
6 May 2021
Athlone Refuse Transfer Station and Kraaifontein Waste Management Facility not accepting builders’ rubble at the moment. The City of Cape Town regrets to inform residents and contractors that it is not currently possible to receive builders rubble at the Athlone Refuse Transfer Station and Kraaifontein Waste Management Facility.
With regard to Kraaifontein, this is a result of a need to replace the containers for builders rubble, whereas in the case of Athlone, a capacity upgrade needs to be completed before this service can resume.
It is expected that containers at Kraaifontein will be replaced before 1 July 2021, and that the capacity upgrade at Athlone will be completed before the end of May.
In the meantime residents and contractors can make use of the Coastal Park, Bellville or Vissershok landfills, and drop-off sites remain open for residents. However remaining facilities may fill up more quickly than usual, and at times it may be necessary to redirect customers to the closest alternative.
The City sincerely regrets the current situation and is doing everything possible to restore normal services as soon as possible. This includes exploring possible creation of temporary capacity at Athlone and Kraaifontein.
