Planned water supply maintenance for 24 to 27 February 2025
21 February 2025
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas
Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network in the following areas:
Tuesday, 25 February 2025, from 10:00 until 13:00: Bothasig.
Zero-pressure testing and step-testing are part of the installation process for zone management infrastructure. Tests are done in advance to see if any unmapped inflows need to be considered before installing new infrastructure (such as pressure reducing valves for pressure management).
In these affected areas, some residents may experience low water pressure, and some may have no water coming out of their taps for some time during the testing period. Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict which exact areas or streets will experience disruptions.
Additional zone management investigations will be carried out to ensure that existing infrastructure is operating effectively. Pressure fluctuations may be experienced, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact as far as possible.
This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage.
Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Residents are advised to store enough water in advance, as a precautionary measure. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers.
Planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Newlands Spring
The Newlands Spring water collection facility in Main Road, Newlands will be closed from 08:00 until 16:00 on Monday, 24 February 2025. This will enable the maintenance team to do essential maintenance to the spring water supply infrastructure on site.
Part of Sea Point
The water supply will be shut off temporarily to part of St Johns Road and inter-leading streets such as Ocean View Drive, Avenue St. Charles, Barkly Road and possibly surrounding streets in Sea Point from 09:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 25 February 2025. This will enable the maintenance team to replace a fire hydrant and valve at the corner of Ocean View Drive and install an additional temporary valve to facilitate the connection of the new pipeline to the existing water infrastructure. Affected residents and businesses are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Masiphumelele and Sun Valley
The water supply to these areas will be shut off temporarily, from 09:00 until 18:00 on Tuesday, 25 February 2025. This will enable the safe replacement of leaking fittings in the valve chamber from the Harrington pump station to the main water supply for the area. A water tanker will be placed in Masiphumelele and another in Sun Valley. Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Martinville, Benetownship, Roundby, Kalamunda and a portion of Bizweni – Somerset West
The water supply to these areas will be shut off temporarily from 10:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 25 February 2025. This will allow for the installation of a pressure reducing valve (PRV) on the water supply main to these areas. Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Gants Park and Strand Industria
The water supply to these areas will be shut off temporarily from 10:00 until 17:00 on Thursday, 27 February 2025. This will allow for the installation of a pressure reducing valve (PRV) on the water supply main to these areas. Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.
The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.
