On Saturday, 12 June 2021, officers from the Metro Police K9 Unit arrested a suspect for possession of drugs with an estimated street value of R50 000 in the Edgemead area. Officers were on a crime prevention patrol in Edgemead Drive when they stopped a Green Toyota Corolla with a broken tail light. When officers approached the vehicle, they smelled dagga. While searching the vehicle, officers discovered a plastic bag containing 61 units of Rock Cocaine.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of drugs and was detained at Bothasig SAPS. It was later discovered that the suspect is out on bail for a similar offence. He was arrested by the K9 Unit three months ago.

‘The arrest of a suspect out on bail for the same offence shows the blatant disregard for the law. The fact that the suspect was arrested for the second time in just three months shows that there are serious challenges in the criminal justice system. Our officers do their part in successfully arresting a suspect on a serious illegal drug offence and hands the suspect over to SAPS. The second part of a successful conviction relies on the criminal justice system to ensure that an effective investigation takes place to support a conviction. We hope that the challenges in the criminal justice system will be addressed to avoid the cycle of repeat offenders engaging in criminal activity,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
