Newly-elected City councillors sworn in

10 December 2020

Today, two new City of Cape Town councillors were formally sworn in during a small Councillor Inauguration ceremony, presided over by City Speaker, Alderman Dirk Smit.

The Councillor Inauguration took place following several by-elections held across the City on 11 November 2020 and 9 December 2020, respectively.

The newly-elected councillors will represent the following wards accordingly:

  • Councillor Karina Mare: Ward 14
  • Councillor Ian McMahon: Ward 115

Typically, during the short but serious ceremony, new councillors are welcomed to the City of Cape Town Council by the Speaker, Alderman Smit, who advises them on important Council protocols and procedures.

The councillors are then invited to take part in a solemn affirmation or swearing-in ceremony where - in their language of choice - they affirm that they will remain faithful to the Republic of South Africa; will obey, respect and uphold the Constitution and all other laws of the Republic; and promise to perform their functions as members of the City of Cape Town Council to the best of their ability.

‘I would like to congratulate our newly sworn-in councillors and wish them all the best in their new roles for the year that lies ahead, and the challenges it may bring. These are unprecedented times and councillors, as leaders in their communities, must set the example and remain vigilant, as COVID-19 is still very much with us all.

‘I would also like to use this opportunity to remind councillors to act in the best interests of the municipality and its residents at all times; and to always endeavour to go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the City and its people, regardless of their political affiliation,’ said City Speaker, Alderman Dirk Smit.
