Construction work on a new non-motorised pavement in Ottery is nearing
completion. The route, which runs along the western side of Plantation Road from
the intersection with Klip Road past Ferness Estate and which links up with
Ottery station, will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the
area.
The upgrade to the transport infrastructure was funded via a Public Transport
Network Grant (PTNG) which provided R6.5 million for the project. Work began in
June 2015 when the contractor, Four Stones Civils, arrived on site and the final
construction work is due to be completed by the end of February 2016.
The non-motorised route is wide enough to accommodate both cyclists and
pedestrians, who will no longer have to risk coming into conflict with motorists
along this busy commuter corridor. Pedestrians will also no longer have to
contend with a dusty road in summer or muddy conditions during winter.
“What a difference the upgrade has made. It has taken a long time for this
project to be completed but it is money really well spent. Our residents from
Lotus River, Parkwood and Ferness Estate have expressed their thanks for the new
route,” said Cllr Monty Oliver (Ward 63).
