The City of Cape Town has installed eight cameras that tilt, pan and zoom and six static cameras to enhance safety efforts in Fransie van Zyl Drive, which has been a hotspot for various criminal activities.

The cameras were installed in response to reports of robberies along this stretch of road. They will give the City’s Metro Police the capacity to monitor this area and enable them to deploy their resources more efficiently and optimally to the required areas

The devices were installed at a cost of almost R5 million and the funding was sourced from the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) as well as R197 000 from ward allocations

‘Monitoring community safety is a priority for us and these new devices will also help us to keep an eye on student movement from the Medical Campus at Tygerberg Hospital. The devices will also help to increase the response time to car accidents and monitor traffic flow in the area,’ said Alderman Smith.
