Mayor Dan Plato extends condolences to families of victims of sandbank collapse

City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service and Metro Emergency Services recovered the bodies of four children who died when a sandbank collapsed at the N2 Borcherds in Nyanga

City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service and Metro Emergency Services recovered the bodies of four children who died when a sandbank collapsed at the N2 Borcherds in Nyanga, late yesterday. Technical rescue teams, including the K9-Unit, had been brought in to search for those affected. Read more below:

‘What started as a moment of happiness through children playing outside, quickly became a tragedy after the sandbank collapsed. The fourth victim was recovered by rescue personnel in the early hours of this morning and I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of all four victims. The past year has shown us how fragile life is and this incident reminds us of the uncertainty of life. Our thoughts are with their families during this time of grief,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

Counselling has been offered to the family members of the victims.
