On Friday, 11 December 2015 the Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department hosted a festive season holiday safety programme for 200 children from the surrounding areas at the Colorado Park Community Hall. The event featured key community role-players who all contributed to the event.
The Colorado Seniors assisted with the catering as well as the supervision of the children. Love Life presented a self-awareness talk and encouraged attendees to practise peer learning by engaging with each other socially. Colwood Diabetics gave a presentation on the risks of diabetes and how to mitigate its effect.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management officials spoke on fire safety and nature conservation staff spoke on a range of topics including snakes, spiders and local vegetation. The youngsters were also given the chance to stretch their legs as part of a mass fitness activity. They were also shown how to use outdoor gym equipment. Presentations were also given by neighbourhood watch members, Fire Services, SAPS and Environmental Health.
“I would like to thank all those involved in making this event a huge success and a very special thanks to Mr Melford Planga, the event organiser. It was a wonderful initiative and residents were extremely pleased with the guidance and advice provided to the children by the various departments,” said Councillor Natalie Bent, chairperson of Subcouncil 23.
