Foreign volunteers join with community youth to establish a food garden in Lotus River

2 February 2016

On Tuesday, 5 January 2016 a group of four foreign missionaries from the USA and the UK visited the office of Ward Councillor Leslie Isaacs (Ward 65) in Lotus River. The purpose of the visit was to identify a suitable community upliftment project with assistance from the subcouncil.

Cllr Isaacs advised the volunteers on the challenges facing the youth in the community, and suggested that a project be started that could include participation by young members of the community. After some discussion, it was decided that establishing a vegetable garden would be a feasible community project.

A piece of land was secured by Cllr Isaacs from the Asibambani Youth Village in Kilp Road, Lotus River, for the project. This would allow the young people living there to take an active role in developing the garden and at the same time provide the facility and surrounding community with a wholesome food supply.

On Saturday, 16 January 2016 the volunteers along with Cllr Isaacs and some members of the community arrived on site and began preparing the land for use as a vegetable garden.

Vegetables will be planted in the next phase of the development and the young gardeners will be shown how to tend the vegetables and ensure food security for their families.
