Executive Mayor Dan Plato takes Clean-up Campaign to Joe Slovo, Milnerton

5 July 2019

The 'Keep Cape Town Clean campaign was launched in March this year and has inspired clean-ups by organisations at various sites across the city.

'We hope residents will continue helping to spread this idea. I am pleased that through this campaign, communities and organisations have arranged their own clean-ups of beaches and other sites around Cape Town. The message of the campaign was to create awareness of clean neighbourhoods and it seems to be taking hold in the minds of residents. It is, however, concerning that children are playing near the dirt which is being dumped illegally and we want to work with communities to help us keep areas clean and healthy,' said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

The staff from our Solid Waste Department do their utmost to keep areas clean with regular refuse removal, but the responsibility to not litter is on our residents.

In my January adjustment budget, I allocated R115 million to help tackle grime and it has had the desired result. We now need to keep the momentum and continue to drive the message of keeping our neighbourhoods clean.

We will soon revisit areas that we have held clean-ups at to see if residents have maintained the cleanliness.

Illegal dumping is harmful and against the law. Vehicles used in illegal dumping can be confiscated and a release fee of nearly R16 000 will be charged, over-and-above the fines issued for dumping. To report illegal dumping, please call 0860 103 089

We call on our residents to come out and support the campaign. #KeepCapeTownClean!
