Various WhatsApp and social media messages are doing the rounds warning of an imminent move to Stage 8 tonight, 25 May 2023.

‘This is fake news - at this stage at least. While the Eskom situation is severe and moving to higher stages of load-shedding is a real possibility at some point, this will be communicated by the City on its official channels on social media and on its website. This will be done after a declaration by Eskom’s network control to the City’s network control.

‘Those creating these messages that are not from official sources, and even merely sending them on without a second thought, are causing panic and mayhem, fear and disorder. The creators of these messages thrive on this. We urge our residents not to fall victim to fake news and to check Eskom and the City’s official sources for information before forwarding these often anonymously written messsages. As always, to assist over the peak time in the evenings, we ask customers to reduce usage where possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.
