Donation of much-needed medical equipment continues to bring comfort to vulnerable residents

18 February 2019

For a number of years, the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC), a Taiwanese charity organisation, has distributed durable medical equipment, medicine and clothing to people in need across Africa.

Thanks to a continued good working relationship between the City of Cape Town’s Speaker, Alderman Dirk Smit, and the local Taipei Liaison Office helmed by Mr Dean Wang, the City today received another consignment of medical equipment. The Cape Town Taipei Liaison Office helps to facilitate the receipt of containers stocked with durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and commodes.

The City of Cape town has been a grateful recipient of these donations for many years. With the inclusion of the donations today, the Taipei Liaison Office has provided the City with a total of 1 104 wheelchairs, 594 commodes and 440 walkers since 2012 worth hundreds of thousands of rands.

As a Caring City, whose aim it is to look after the elderly and disabled, these donations will assist in instilling a sense of pride and independence for residents who in the past have not had access to these aids for some time due to long waiting lists at state hospitals.

‘I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Cape Town Taipei Liaison Office for their generous and continued assistance and donations over the years. The durable medical equipment handed over today will once again go a long way towards bringing comfort to a number of our most vulnerable residents. This donation of much-needed mobility equipment and other items of comfort helps us to deliver on our promise of promoting individual and community welfare. The 200 powder-coated wheelchairs, 50 walkers, and 50 commodes will assist a number of our most vulnerable residents who have special needs,’ said Alderman Smit.

The Amitofo Care Centre is a charity organisation founded by the Venerable Huei Li in Taiwan in the early 1990s. The Venerable Huei Li is known as the African monk. The idea of the care centre originated from the Venerable Huei Li’s compassionate heart and desire to help people in Africa who are battling with terminal illness and those living in extreme poverty.
