Battle of Square Hill Remembrance Ceremony.
Alderman Andrews paid tribute to the First and Second Battalion Cape Corps, comprising coloured men who sacrificed their lives to bring about World Peace, during the Battle of Square Hill in Palestine from 19 until 21 September 1918.
The Battle of Square Hill is recognised as an important battle in the Military History of South Africa and the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has highlighted it as one of the four major commemorations which form part of its programme for the centenary of the First World War.
‘Today we honour the men who bravely fought for world peace to the point of losing their lives and sacrificing their families for such a worthy cause. We recognise the role they played and are mindful of their efforts. The fight for peace continues as the world is still in turmoil today. We will continue the fight until people are free to travel and interact with each, without fear. We will forever be indebted to the heroes that have gone before us, for their eternal sacrifice, bravery and faithfulness,’ said Alderman Andrews.
