City steadily replaces water and sewer pipes during September

18 October 2023

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has continued to make massive strides in its proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme.

Following from the major work completed in August to rehabilitate the City's water and sewer pipe infrastructure, operational teams have continued to gain momentum throughout September.

In total, 6 494m of water pipes and 7 207m of sewer pipes were replaced in September.

Work was done across several communities in Cape Town, including Melkbos, Atlantis, Kuils River, Athlone, Kraaifontein, Lansdowne and Bellville.

Lansdowne and Athlone showed significant progress on the number of sewer pipes replaced, recorded at 1 010m and 1 152m respectively. These were the highest figures for sewer pipe replacements reported for the month.

Pipeline replacement forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate's strategy to reduce the number of sewer spills and to provide efficient sanitation services.

In the current 2023/24 financial year, R863,6 million has been allocated in the directorate's budget for pipe replacement city-wide.

'Investing in upgrading reticulation systems ensures that our infrastructure is working optimally. In the long term this will help to reduce sewer overflows and in so doing, improve the living conditions of communities affected by ongoing pipe bursts and sewage overflows. In addition, implementation of the pipeline replacement strategy on such a large scale, demonstrates the City's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to tap water, distributed safely for drinking and other use,' said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused when this work takes place in various areas over the coming months. Proactive maintenance is necessary to improve overall water and sanitation services.
