Transport for Cape Town, the City of Cape Town’s transport authority, has installed two card vending machines – one at the MyCiTi station in Adderley Street and another at Century City Gate. Apart from conducting their business at the kiosks, commuters at these two locations now have the option of using the card vending machine to buy a myconnect card, or load money or Mover Points on their myconnect cards.
Card vending machines piloted at two key locations
The card vending machines (CVMs) were installed last week and started operating as of Saturday, 18 June 2016. The City chose these two locations for the pilot project because of the type of communications network infrastructure available at the facilities. At Century City Gate the CVM uses 3G connectivity to perform transactions and at Adderley Street the CVM makes use of fibre optic – the point of the pilot project is, among others, to test the efficiency of the CVMs in terms of the communications network infrastructure available.
‘We anticipate that the CVMs will become very popular once commuters get used to conducting their transactions automatically instead of manually at the kiosks. One can compare the MyCiTi CVMs to the machines that some of us use to pay for parking at the airport. The CVMs accept cash and bankcards to pay for transactions and provide change in coins,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
Quick and convenient access to MyCiTi services
Commuters can use the MyCiTi CVMs for the following services:- Upload money or Mover Points on their myconnect cards
- Purchase a myconnect card
- Purchase other MyCiTi products such as the monthly package
‘The CVMs provide commuters with the option of three operating languages: English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans. It is to be expected that some commuters may be wary at first to make use of the CVMs, but like everything else in life, it is just a matter of time before the majority will feel comfortable enough to use them,’ said Councillor Herron.
