City implements essential upgrades to Gabriel and Geneva Courts in Scottsdene
11 June 2020
Funds were allocated to each of the 24 Subcouncils in the 2019/20 financial year with the intention to implement projects identified by the community within each of the wards.
The community within Gabriel Court, which consists of 288 families, had identified various issues they are facing on a daily basis. It was prioritised that the leaks on the roof and parapet walls should be fixed prior to the onset of the winter rains and that attention should also be given to the upgrading of the courtyard and shared spaces between the various residential blocks in Geneva and Gabriel Courts.
The Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) team have worked with the subcouncil to implement the following upgrades:
- Fixing of the leaks on the roofs and at the top of the parapet walls at a cost of R920 000, to be completed at the end of this month.
- Upgrading the courtyard and central spaces including paving, the installing kerbs and gulleys to deal with storm water run-off and the pooling of water during the winter rains. The upgrade also includes the replacement and reinstatement of the gutter downpipes. The cost of this element of the upgrade is R520 000, and is also due for completion by end of June.
It is through this approach that Subcouncils are beginning to take on the responsibility to facilitate and to manage the upgrading of communities with the support of the MURP.
We thank our residents for their participation and their patience while work is ongoing. We are making every effort to complete work on site as soon as possible. As a caring City, we will continue to engage with our residents so that we work together to improve the living conditions for our residents and their families.
