According to the Mayoral Committee Member for Area South, Councillor Eddie Andrews, the aim of the workshops is to empower residents so that they know and understand their constitutional rights, when to exercise them, and how to use the various communication channels to get assistance and advice.

The focus during the first workshop was on Chapter 9 institutions such as the Public Protector, the South African Human Rights Commission, the Auditor-General, the Commission for Gender Equality and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.

The need for an awareness and education campaign was identified during a consultative process with the community through the Community Action Plan that is a partnership forum initiated by MURP.

‘Empowering community organisations through knowledge sharing is a priority of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan. These workshops will assist in empowering communities with information about which institution to approach should residents need assistance with a specific issue. Furthermore, it will stimulate positive thinking in the community and empower those who feel their rights have been violated,’ said Councillor Andrews.

The workshop covered a series of topics which included deceased estates, labour law, how to claim from the Road Accident Fund, buying and selling of property, as well as exercising your rights according to the Consumer Protection Act.

The workshop generated active debate and important questions of clarity were raised with regard to ‘knowing your rights’ as an individual and advice on legal issues. In addition, some participants were given advice and support in drafting of a will.

Residents were also afforded an opportunity to consult with the legal team from TNK law firm on personal matters.

The next three workshops will take place on 9, 17 and 22 May 2018.

‘Not only does these workshops increase  public awareness on constitutional rights, but they provide the City with a better understanding of the socio- economic conditions of Area South and how MURP services can address the challenges. It’s about creating opportunities so that every citizen can improve their quality of life,’ added Councillor Andrews.
