On Sunday, 8 May the annual
Slave Route Challenge road running event will take place in the Cape Town CBD. The race gives entrants the unique opportunity to honour South Africa’s heritage.
The Iziko Slave Lodge has a Column of Memory inscribed with the names of 8 000 men, women and children who were an important part of South Africa’s history. This year each person who registers to take part will run on behalf of one of these 8 000 names, honouring a specific individual.
The race offers several courses ranging from a 21 km half-marathon to a 5 km fun run to cater for runners of all ages and abilities. All of the routes will take in a number of the city’s historical landmarks that are connected to the legacy of slavery in the Cape including the Grand Parade, the whipping post, the Old Slave Church, the Slave Lodge and the slave tree plaque.
The race starts from Darling Street opposite the City Hall and ends on the Grand Parade. Entrants receive a commemorative medal, a digital race photo and discount vouchers for sports gear.
