City holiday programmes packed with loads of fun

5 July 2019

‘Keeping young ones busy and active, especially during the winter holiday, is no easy feat but our facilities rose to the occasion to make the cold days fun, interactive and educational. The range of activities offered by the different departments encouraged learning in a fun way,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

The little holidaymakers could choose from indoor and outdoor activities at the City's recreation hubs, presentations by the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department which focused on anti-bullying and child safety, and chess tournaments and crafts at City libraries.

'A highlight has been the chess tournament at Rylands Library, organised by the friends of Rylands Library group. It started three years ago to keep young people off the street and has grown so much in popularity that it draws people from around the city. Many of our libraries offer chess and it's a fun way of learning how to follow the rules and can help to build self-confidence,' said Councillor Badroodien.

The City's Recreation and Parks Department hosted a variety of programmes which were jam-packed, multi-disciplinary edutainment activities relating to sport, education, arts, culture and recreation.

'This included teaching and developing important life skills such as leadership, educational awareness and personal development. It is aimed at encouraging a sense of social cohesion and strengthening resilience among the children. Holiday programmes aim to keep them busy with positive activities, so that they refrain from engaging in anti-social activities,' said Councillor Badroodien.

A highlight of their programme was the Youth Holiday Transversal Programme for 55 selected participants, aged 12 to 14, from facilities in Bloekombos, Joe Slovo Recreation Hall, Scottsdene Community Centre, Scottsville: FF Erasmus Community Hall and Fisantekraal Multipurpose Centre.

‘The programme gave young people an opportunity to enjoy a day at the beach and raise their awareness of environmental issues facing our communities. ,’ said Councillor Badroodien.

Another popular programme was the Summer Greens flagship holiday programme, themed Under the Sea, which hosted 120 children daily from toddlers to high school learners. The programme included team building, sporting codes, and arts and crafts activities for all age groups.

Other highlights included a talent show at the Ottery Bruce Centre with 50 participants learning to play a musical instrument, interactive games, educational initiatives and crafts.

‘Every holiday our facilities ensure no one has to be bored. I want to commend staff who pour their hearts and energy into an exhaustive list of activities each holiday. These programmes not only keep our children safe and busy, but they get the opportunity to socialise and learn new skills. Now there's even more reason to look forward to school holidays,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
