City donates security equipment to local Khayelitsha neighbourhood watches

A ceremony was held on Thursday, 30 June 2016 at the Khayelitsha Training Centre where protective clothing for use by the Khayelitsha and Gunya neighbourhood watches was handed over to the community.

Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, delivered the keynote address. He spoke on the harmful effects, both personally and socially, which arise from alcohol abuse and pledged his support towards the Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer programme which is run by the neighbourhood watch members. Ald Smith also commended the neighbourhood watches for their dedication to protecting the safety of the community and said that their efforts were the single most effective deterrent to crime.

A total of 60 protective vests and other security equipment to the value of R75 000 was handed over to neighbourhood watch representatives, with Cllr Mthwalo Mkutswana officiating.

Those present included Buthulile Ntshingila, the Community Safety and Alcohol Harms Reducation Coordinator (021 447 3881) and Nthuthu Mtwana, the Social Crime Prevention Coordinator (021 360 3220 or 082 838 8573). Residents are encouraged to call for assistance with alcohol, substance abuse or to become involved in fighting crime.
