October puts older persons in the spotlight, with International Day for Older Persons commemorated on 1 October annually.
This past week, the City's Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department hosted events at three City-Owned senior citizen complexes.
'The events were not only to honour the seniors in Cape Town, but it was also an opportunity to show our seniors that they are being cared for and that their efforts and contributions to our communities are appreciated.
'Part of commemorating International Day for Older Persons is also to raise awareness amongst the broader society to care for the older person, show compassion and to report any neglect and abuse of older persons at all levels of society,' said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
The programme for the events focused on the importance of mental health for seniors, healthy living and active ageing, recreational activities and appropriate entertainment.
'Our older persons are some of our most vulnerable residents, and face a number of challenges including financial, emotional and physical neglect and abuse. As caring communities, we must ensure their needs are met and they have access to healthcare,' said Councillor Van der Ross.
