Blommendal Neighbourhood Watch organises community clean-up in partnership with the City

1 February 2016

In January 2016, the Blommendal Neighbourhood Watch conducted a community cleaning operation to improve the area’s aesthetic. The operation focussed on the entrance to the residential neighbourhood along De La Haye Avenue, the corner of Noord Street and the entrance to Douglas Carr Avenue.

The weekend of 20 and 21 January 2016 was set aside for clean-up operations and the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management and City Parks departments were on hand to lend assistance. Litter and other waste materials that were collected in the area were disposed of along with tree branches from prunings along De La Haye Avenue.

The neighbourhood watch also took advantage of the opportunity to engage with local residents on the issue of community safety and security, Residents were requested to report any suspicious activities to the neighbourhood watch or to Law Enforcement.

Information on newly installed licence plate recognition CCTV technology was also provided to alert residents to the fact that the City was working with the community to improve safety for all.

“We as a City are happy to partner with communities who would like to embark on safety and clean-up initiatives. Residents are encouraged to get in touch with their local ward councillor who can arrange for the provision of refuse bags and the removal of waste materials including garden waste. Applications should be made at least a week in advance of any community initiatives,” said Cllr Brendan Van Der Merwe, ward councillor for Ward 3.
