Alderman JP Smith joins ‘Copperheads’ on metal theft patrols

The unit, also known as the ‘Copperheads’ is responsible for curbing metal and cable theft, and has been in operation since 2007.
During the first three months of the current financial year, officers made 22 arrests and confiscated nearly 170 metres of copper cable and 85 kilograms of cast iron drain covers and frames.
In some of their most recent successes, officers arrested nine suspects in two separate incidents in Factreton and Bonteheuwel for cable theft.
